Dictating the Dialogue

“The Left...views the world not as a conflict between good and evil but between white and black, male and female, and rich and poor... As a general proposition, subject to exceptions that accompany all generalizations, the Left has considerably more compassion for groups (racial, ethnic, socioeconomic and sexual groups it favors) than for individuals.” —Dennis Prager

In a few of my recent posts I have mentioned how the Left is dictating the dialogue. Some may call this “political correctness”, but I prefer the term used by Thomas Sowell, a black conservative thinker and commentator.

What does dictating the dialogue mean? In simple terms it means that the media and the Left have been able to remove certain words and terms from our lexicon and substitute them with others to their liking. A prime example of this is abortion.

Abortion is a correct medical term for ending the life or an unborn or partially born infant. It is a hard word that describes a cruel and evil procedure. The Left is well aware that by using this term they were casting a pall over a procedure they whole heartedly advocated. With this in their mind they began to change the dialogue by using the term “pro choice”. The pro choice advocates are pro choice only in terms of abortion. They certainly do not believe in pro choice when it comes to schools. In the past few years the abortion advocates have taken a new tact by defining abortion as “reproductive rights.” This term sounds as though it might be defined in the U.S. Constitution –it is not. This is how the Left and their cronies in the mainstream media have defined the debate.

This phenomenon is not unique to the United States. It has migrated to all English speaking nations, including our “down under” friends in Australia. Associated Press reports that; “an Australian school principal has asked students to stop using the word “gay” when singing a classic children’s song, but said Thursday no offense was intended — he was simply trying to keep the kids from laughing.”

Principal Garry Martin of Le Page Primary School in Melbourne said he instructed students to substitute the line “Fun your life must be” for the original “Gay your life must be” when singing “Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree.” The song about a native Australian bird is a favorite around campfires from New Zealand to Canada.

Martin said “he was playing a recording of the song for the students about a month ago when the line “gay your life must be” produced a flurry of giggles throughout the classroom. Some of the students use the word “gay” as a schoolyard taunt, he said, but don’t understand its true meaning. And so, to calm them down, he told them to swap in the word “fun” for “gay.”

“It wasn’t misplaced political correctness, it wasn’t homophobia, there was nothing really calculated in doing it,” he told The Associated Press. “I could’ve stopped the whole class and gone into a very caring, supportive explanation of gay being quite a reasonable choice in lifestyle that some people make, but I was only talking with 7- and 8-year-olds and I think that sort of thing is better explained more fully with parents.”

His decision erupted into a controversy, “he said, after one of the students told his parents about Martin’s change to the song. Word then spread from the parents to friends to the local newspaper, which ran a story — and Martin found himself being bombarded with angry e-mails.”

The outcome of this story is that Martin, in response to protests from parents reversed his decision and said he would allow to song to be sung with the original lyrics, but perhaps not as often.

So, here we have another example of dictating the dialogue. Homosexuality is a medical term that defines “a romantic or sexual attraction or behavior among members of the same sex/gender. As a sexual orientation, homosexuality refers to "an enduring pattern of or disposition to experience sexual, affectional, or romantic attractions primarily to" people of the same sex; "it also refers to an individual’s sense of personal and social identity based on those attractions, behaviors expressing them, and membership in a community of others who share them.” This includes both male and female (lesbian) homosexuality.

Again we have a case where the advocates for homosexuality believed the term “homosexual” was too harsh and carried Biblical condemnation. Once again, over the years the Left and their minions in the MSM began to soften the dialogue in order to make the lifestyle more acceptable. They substituted the term “Gay” for male homosexuality but kept the term lesbian for female. The media, government and politicians began using “Gay and Lesbian” when referring to homosexuals.

As the power of the homosexual lobby increased the term lesbian was dropped and now all homosexuals are referred to as Gay. I don’t know why they selected Gay as the term of preference. Gay means happy, fun and delighted. According to many in the psychiatric community both men and women in homosexual relationships have more emotional issues than the heterosexual population. The reason why the homosexual community chose the term “Gay” is beyond me. Perhaps it was to encourage young people to the cause by saying homosexuals have more fun.

A recent report by the Gallup polling organization states; “In his 1948 book, Sexual Behavior in the Human Male, Alfred Kinsey shocked the world by announcing that 10% of the male population is gay. A 1993 Janus Report estimated that nine percent of men and five percent of women had more than "occasional" homosexual relationships. The 2000 U.S. Census Bureau found that homosexual couples constitute less than 1% of American households. The Family Research Report says "around 2-3% of men, and 2% of women, are homosexual or bisexual." The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force estimates three to eight percent of both sexes.” No one really knows what the rue number is, but a generally accepted number is 7% for men and 4% for women.

According to the 2000 Census California leads the nation in population of homosexual couples with West Hollywood leading the way. San Francisco and Palm Springs are also mentioned in the top 10.

It is also worth noting here that no one really knows the percentage of African-American or Hispanic homosexuals as the life style is considered an abomination in those communities. This was evident by the recent vote in favor of proposition 8 in California.

This is just one of many examples of how the social progressives have been able to dictate the dialogue by changing the terms we use today. The war against terror has become “an oversees contingency operation” and illegal immigration has become “undocumented workers.”

A fully assembled B-29 that dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima in WWII, the Enola Gay, went on permanent display at the National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in December 2003. Perhaps in the future the plane will be renamed ENOLA FUN – at least no one will snicker or giggle when they see the plane in the future.
